The new SageWire website has been in the works for a while now. Over the past year and a half, I have worked as an individual contributor on an implementation project — suggesting direction of the project, advising on how to get buy-in, and designing customizations.
What I experienced reinforced many of the beliefs and values behind the SageWire platform.
Buy-in and reinforcement at the top is critical
No matter how good the intention of a new software platform is or how many issues it could solve, if you don't have leadership on board the project will stumble. This may seem obvious but it is easier said than done. On many projects, the top leadership sets the expectations. However as you go down the totem pole, often buy-in falters. People may see the new system as a threat to their job or simply like the way things have always been done. And if your employees don't see buy-in by their managers, why would they buy-in themselves?
After the initial decision of moving forward with an implementation, this should be the next discussion and plan put into motion.
Training matters
Related to buy-in, proper training makes a new software launch so much smoother and gives people confidence in the new system. It is already stressful enough learning something new and putting it to practice and without good training your employees and starting with one arm tied behind their back.
Training breeds confidence, confidence creates buy-in, buy-in leads to success.
Communication is key
Whether it is explaining the benefits or necessities of the implementation, making sure communication is transparent with all stakeholders is critical. Knowing where the project stands and where it is going to go leads to better results. And communication is not a one way street from the top. Having feedback from base users is just as important. Being heard and affecting the project in a meaningful way leads back to engagement.
